Quizzical

Saw this one floating around in the blogosphere, and I’ve been trying to really get into this blogging thing. (Yes, I’m a late adopter. I still have a dumbphone.)

What is the last thing you watched on TV? Grey’s Anatomy. I’m on season 7 on Netflix. Since we gave up cable when Alex was small, I feel like I have MORE to watch than I did back then. I can pick a show and watch ALL of it, and then by the time I’m done I’ve usually found several other shows to binge on. I watched Ghostbusters with Alex yesterday, too.

When did you last step outside? What were you doing? Took Alex to the library, which we do once a week. He goes through books like… well, like I did when I was his age. Then we went bowling with friends. He’s out there right now with Daddy while my lemon bars are baking!

What is on the walls of the room you are in?
A little bit of everything. Above the computer I’m currently using are a weekly calendar, Alex’s school cafeteria menu and monthly calendar, some photos and a framed handprint picture he made me when he was 2. On other walls are artwork by Alex, more family photos, and the Alex photo wall- pictures of him from newborn to one year.

If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy?  A house for us. That’s all I want in the world. And the lumber to build a fort for Alex.

Tell me something about you that most people don’t know. Hmmm. When I was Alex’s age I would play in our backyard and climb trees higher than our house.

Who made the last incoming call on your phone?  My husband made the last call I took. The last one I missed was from the optician letting us know our glasses were in. I lead an exciting life.

If you could change something about your home, without worry about expense or mess, what would you do? Um, move out of it into a home that we own??

What was the last thing you bought? A half dozen doughnuts. What? I had a gift card. They have MINT OREO CREAM DOUGHNUTS, people.

Would you go bungee jumping or sky diving? I think I outgrew that phase of my life, sadly.

If you could eat lunch with one famous person, who would it be? Ed Robertson. (Barenaked Ladies)

Which store would you choose to max out your credit card? Target.

Is the glass half empty or half full?  My glass is currently half full.

What’s the farthest-away place you’ve been? Ugh, Florida. Not very exotic. I have been to New Orleans, though, which was my favorite place to visit. What I remember of it at least.

What’s under your bed? Inexplicably, a lot of picture frames.

What is your favorite time of the day?  Bedtime stories.

What Inspires you? Kids. They never cease to amaze me. Their creativity, natural kindness and imagination are truly inspiring. The Toodles inspires me every day and helps me find that little kid inside of me.

Where It Went

I keep saying I don’t know where the time went…. but here is this kid, amazing me and reading and doing math. This weekend he went to his very first “drop-off” party. I was all awkward at the door. All the birthday parties he has been to before have been the parties of our friends’ kids, so we went right on in with him. This time, I gave the Mom of his classmate my phone number, told Alex to behave, petted their dog…. and left. I made walnut bread at home and then was sad when it was still in the oven when it was time to go pick Alex up. Next time I’m leaving my husband home to deal with the bread and I’m going to pick Alex up!

That Mom is my hero… she had about ten kindergartners in her house for two and a half hours!

Also this weekend, Alex picked out his very first pair of glasses. He doesn’t really need them yet- he will eventually, so we decided to get him a pair while they are still covered under insurance. If he starts complaining of headaches or anything, we’ll already have them. He looked so handsome and grown up in the ones he chose.

I feel like it’s all slipping through my fingers so fast. He barely fits on my lap anymore. I hold him close to me when he agrees to sit there.

And It Begins….

Tomorrow I send my Bear off to kindergarten. I’m okay. He’s ready; excited even. The thing I’m struggling with is TRUSTING people. I met his teacher; she’s lovely and I trust her. It’s everyone else in the world. Since he was 16 months old, Bear has been with the same sitter. She has taught him so much and treated him so well. She’s become family and he has had so much fun there. He will still be with her before and after school, on vacations and days off. But tomorrow I have to hand my Bear over to so many people I don’t know, and trust that they will treat him well. Bus driver, lunch ladies, other teachers, other kids.

He’s my heart, guys. He’s the most special person in my world. He’s my Bear, my Toodles, my snoogle bunch, my sunshine, my peanut bear, my Trouble Tornado. I love him more than all the stars in the sky. I know I can’t protect him from everything and I shouldn’t. He has to learn to navigate this world and all the not-so-good things that may happen in it. But this is the first time I’m really sending him out into the world, and I know he’s ready, I know he’s excited. It’s all me that’s not ready, but here we go…. tomorrow morning we will watch him get on the bus and go off to start his new adventure.

He has been putting up with me hugging him an extra lot over the past couple days. I just want to hold on tight and let him go. Image

Odds Are

Tonight I will be seeing the band Barenaked Ladies for the 15th time, 20 years after the first time I saw them. They are without question my favorite band, as anyone who knows me well can attest (probably with an eye roll or two, having been subjected to some of my BNL knowledge and various minutia). In 1993, I was a freshman in high school who went to see them with a good friend (who I also saw them with last summer). This year I am leaving my husband and son at home to go see them again, with friends.

It’s kind of nice when something that excites you can endure for that long! I first heard their music in 1992 and I still get just as excited every time a new CD comes out. The latest one, Grinning Streak, is amazing and I can highly recommend it.

Welcome to MamaSpaz. I’m a mom, a wife, a bargain hunter, a spaz. I’ve been married for almost eight years, and our little Bear is 5 and going into kindergarten in the fall. I’ve never blogged before, so I hope that someone joins me for the ride!
